This study examines changes in the work environment characterized by increasing task complexity, time pressure, and organizational demands that have the potential to trigger work stress, particularly in public service institutions such as the Indonesian National Police. This study aims to analyze the effect of task demands on stress responses with job autonomy as a mediating variable in Riau Regional Police Junior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs). The study used a quantitative approach with a survey design of 204 respondents determined using the Slovin technique, and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS). The results showed that task demands had a positive and significant effect on stress responses and on job autonomy, and job autonomy was proven to have a significant effect on stress responses and mediate the relationship between task demands and stress responses. The research model has strong explanatory power with an R-square value of 0.619 for stress responses. These findings strengthen the application of the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) Model in the police context and emphasize the importance of structuring task loads and providing proportional work autonomy to reduce the negative impact of work stress and improve personnel psychological well-being.
